The first surviving reference to the Dresden inquiry that would lead the Order to Theo Engel is indirect.
A signal reached the Radio Operators’ Room at the Clementinum. It had been relayed from LVL: Florence on the Elbe. Colonel Balzan ordered it sent immediately to Berlin, for Cassar’s eyes only.

Father Cassar was one of the Order’s soldiers inside the Reich. His position depended on remaining hidden. The instruction gave him no name. It identified no object. It did not mention Theo Engel.
Engel enters the File in the reports that followed. Cassar recorded the factory, the workers concealed inside it, and the pressure already being applied to Engel’s family. He reported what he could confirm and left conjecture out.
The early entries do not explain Historian’s interest in Engel. They establish only that the interest existed, and that Cassar had seen enough to continue reporting to Prague.
